LES WILLIAMS, R.I.P.

Legendary Surfer Les Williams has passed on. Les was the first one to show what could be done with a Quigg Chip at Malibu in the late 1940s. He remained active in surfing and was dedicated to the San Onofre Surfing Club, as a long-time member and recently as President. The club's blog has a bit more about Les at:

I only knew Les in recent years - and that was via email to my home over here in the UK ... but what a kind soul. During research for my book on Beach Boys album covers (naturally, the "Surfin' USA" sleeve featuring Les had a significant portion of the text) he recalled those halcyon days of the late 50's and 60's with such relish. I just wish I had gotten to know him that little bit better. RIP my friend ...

I interviewed Les for a film I am working on about some other historic surfers, he was generous with his time, and was a joy to speak with
